What is it about a jersey that fires us up? What is it about seeing someone wearing ‘our’ jersey that creates a connection or understanding? Why is it that sometimes seeing a jersey incites anger or fear? What is the psychology behind the feelings associated with the wearing of a jersey?
A jersey has the ability to transcend sport and continue its ability to connect and communicate beyond the pitch (or stage). This summer, the crowd erupted in Phoenix Park Dublin when Ed Sheeran wore an Irish jersey onto the stage;
Similarly, Japenese model Ryoki Watanabe went viral after being pictured in a 2002 Irish football jersey...and we loved it! It reminded us all of a better time in Irish football!...
and 19yr old hurler Oisin Murphy from Birr, Co. Offally hit the headlines after appearing in the August edition of Vogue, wearing a full GAA kit….
A jersey can hold a lot of significance for the person wearing it as well as who they are wearing it for. This person can be an athlete representing team and country, a supporter wearing it with pride in team and country or someone who just likes the colour and design! For the athlete wearing a jersey, it communicates; “this is who I am, what I do and who I do it for”.
Jersey colours and design also hold significance; reflecting county, region, country or school. The words across the chest reflect the responsibility the athlete has to their club, team or school and those people who have coached and supported them on their journey. The name on the back of a jersey signifies the accountability the athlete has towards themselves. They are accountable to persevere and never give up in the face of adversity because of all the hard work and sacrifices they make on their journey to their personal best.
